Programs and Assessments

A guide to understanding programs and assessments used at Arcanum Elementary

The students at Arcanum Elementary have the opportunity to participate in a variety of academic and social programs. Additionally, teachers administer a variety of assessments to students throughout the year. Information on these items can be found below.

Ohio Achievement Assessments or OAA (Grade 3)

These state-mandated tests are given to third grade students. Third grade students take a Reading OAA in the fall and a Reading  OAA in the spring. Fourth grade students take a Reading and Math OAA in the spring. Students complete these paper/pencil assessments individually and scores are reported back to families in the months following the tests. More information, resources, and practices tests are available on this ODE website.

Gifted Services (Updated 2/14)

At the conclusion of second grade, our students are given the opportunity to be identified as "Gifted" through a variety of assessments.  These students are typically notified in the summer of their qualification.  Students then receive a Written Education Plan, or WEP, which outlines how each student will receive gifted instruction.  We are currently working with the Darke County Education Service Center to examine our current gifted services and explore additional opportunities and programs for our students.  Families of students already identified are encouraged to click here to view summer programming opportunities.

STAR Reading and Math (Grades K-4)

Our students in grades K-4 take the online STAR Reading and/or Math assessments at multiple times throughout the year.  The data is used to determine instruction and groupings for students to best receive services.

Title I (Grades K-2)

Arcanum Elementary is designated as a "Targeted Assistance" Title I building.  Through Title I programs, students receive support related to reading comprehension and fluency skills.  Students are regularly assessed to ensure progress is being made.

Reading Recovery (Grades 1-2)

Reading Recovery is a short-term intervention for first graders having extreme difficulty with early reading and writing.  Specially trained teachers work individually with students in daily 30-minute lessons lasting 12 to 20 weeks.  After a full series of lessons, about 75% of these formerly lowest students reach grade-level standard.

Integrated Media (Grades 3-4)

Our third and fourth grade students attend an "Integrated Media" course in place of their regular library time in previous years.  While working to develop typing skills, students create a number of multimedia presentations while learning about cyberbullying, cyber saftey, and appropriate use of the Internet.  Students explore a number of interactive and collaborative websites while also learning the basic functions and features of a variety of software applications.

Intro to Tech (Grade 2)

Our second grade students attend a blended library and Intro to Tech class during specials.  Students begin working on basic keyboarding and computer application skills.

Third Grade Reading Guarantee (Grade K-3)

The Ohio Department of Education required that, if applicable, districts post their staffing plan for compliance of the Third Grade Reading Guarantee.  The Arcanum-Butler Staffing Plan is available by clicking here.  Please contact the elementary principal for details regarding this plan.
